Light Fixture Installation in Los Angeles, CA
Older Los Angeles homes have a long history of light fixtures. There are original 1920s ceiling fixtures in Spanish Revival homes, builder flush mounts from the 1960s in Valley ranches, bathroom vanity bars from the 1980s in condos and apartments, and whatever the last owner bought on sale and put up themselves. Changing a fixture is one of the quickest ways to update a room. It's also a good time to check what's in the ceiling box, because older LA homes can have brittle cloth-covered wiring, missing ground wires, and light-duty boxes holding fixtures heavier than they were built for.
We install new fixtures on existing boxes and wiring. We turn off power at the breaker, test that the wires are dead, and make sure the box is firmly attached and rated for the new fixture's weight. We make tight, properly capped connections, ground the fixture wherever a ground wire exists, and mount it level against the ceiling or wall. Most fixtures sold in California today are efficient LED models or take LED bulbs, which keeps heat and power use down. We also add dimmers and smart switches, move or add switch locations, and run new wiring when a room needs a fixture where none existed, with our licensed electricians handling every connection.

How a light fixture installation visit usually goes
Power Off and Verify
We shut off the circuit at the breaker and test that the wires are dead before touching anything, then take down the old fixture.
Inspect the Box and Wires
We check that the box is secure and rated for the new fixture's weight, inspect the wire insulation, and confirm whether there's a ground. Anything unsafe gets flagged before we go further.
Mount and Connect
We install the fixture's bracket, make tight connections, ground it where possible, and mount it level and flush against the ceiling or wall.
Test and Clean Up
We turn the power back on, test the fixture and any dimmer or sensor, and clean up the packaging, dust and the old fixture.
Outdoor lighting is a common request in LA, partly for security and partly because people use their patios and yards most of the year. We replace porch lights, garage lights and side-yard lights on existing boxes with motion-sensor or dusk-to-dawn LED fixtures, and we seal the canopy against stucco so winter rain can't get behind it. Near the coast in Santa Monica, Venice and Playa del Rey, we recommend fixtures rated for wet or coastal locations because salt air corrodes cheaper finishes and hardware within a few years. In rentals, owners often want simple, durable fixtures that tenants can change bulbs in easily, and we can help pick ones that will last.
What shapes the price in Los Angeles
Most fixture swaps on existing boxes are quick. The things that add time are heavy chandeliers that need box bracing, high or sloped ceilings, fixtures with many small parts to assemble, and fragile glass or crystal that has to be handled carefully. Plaster ceilings take more care when we need to secure or replace a box. Outdoor lights on stucco walls may need new mounting blocks or sealing so water can't get in behind them. New wiring, a new switch location or swapping an old dimmer for an LED-rated one adds some time and parts, but it all gets done on the same visit. Putting several swaps into one visit is the best way to keep the cost per fixture down.
Neighbors often ask
Is my old wiring safe for a new fixture?
We check every box when we take a fixture down. If the wires are brittle, the insulation is cracked, or we find knob-and-tube wiring, which is common in prewar LA homes, we don't hang the new fixture on it as is. We replace the damaged section at the box or rewire that run so the new light sits on sound wiring, and we tell you what we found before doing anything extra. Often the fix is small and fits into the same visit.
Can you hang a heavy chandelier in my dining room?
Yes, as long as the box and framing can carry the weight. Most standard ceiling boxes are rated for light fixtures only, so for a heavy chandelier we install a brace or box rated for the load. In a two-story entry or a high ceiling, we'll bring the right ladder or scaffold and plan for the extra time.
Can you install a fixture I bought online?
Yes, and most of our fixture jobs work that way. Before you buy, check that it's UL- or ETL-listed and rated for the location, such as damp-rated for a bathroom or wet-rated for an uncovered porch. If you send us a link, we'll confirm it suits your box and ceiling height and let you know if it needs any extra support.
Will a new fixture lower my electric bill?
Switching old incandescent or halogen fixtures to LED does use noticeably less power and puts out far less heat, which helps in summer. The bigger savings come from rooms where lights stay on for long periods, like kitchens, hallways and outdoor lights on timers. We can help you prioritize which fixtures to swap first.
Can you put in a ceiling light where there's only a wall switch now?
Yes. Many older LA homes, especially Craftsman bungalows and some postwar houses, were built with switched wall outlets instead of ceiling fixtures in bedrooms and living rooms. Our licensed electricians run new wiring, set a ceiling box rated for what you plan to hang, and tie it to the wall switch, then we hang the fixture or fan you've chosen and patch the plaster around the opening.
